The Mustang Weekly Newsletter Together, We Shape Our Future: A New Mission and Vision

Greetings McNair Students and Families,

Remember the excitement we shared a few weeks back when we embarked on our mission and vision journey? It has been incredible to see the dedication and collaboration from everyone involved. A lot of hard work and partnership went into this process, and let us tell you, the future is looking bright!

We sincerely hope you're feeling the same level of enthusiasm and energy we are with our newly crafted mission and vision statements. These aren't just words on a page; they're a powerful roadmap that will guide us as we wrap up the current school year, delve into planning for the next, and continue shaping the years to come.

Allow us to explain how this new direction benefits us all:

Clarity and Focus:  We now have a clear picture of our shared goals and the impact we strive to make. This translates into a more focused and energized team, with everyone working towards a common objective. Imagine the power of a united front!

Empowerment and Ownership: Throughout the development process, we received invaluable feedback and contributions from both staff and families. Each and every one of you played a vital role in shaping this mission and vision. You should be incredibly proud of the role you played in crafting our future!

A New Chapter of Growth:  This is a chance to build upon our existing successes and chart a course for even greater achievements. It's a new chapter, bursting with exciting possibilities! We can't wait to embark on this journey together.

In the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more details on how this new mission and vision will translate into tangible improvements for our school community. Stay tuned!  Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we can make this a truly exceptional learning environment for all.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and we look forward to seeing you tomorrow, Mustangs!

All the best,

Mrs. Watson and Mrs. O'Bryant

🧸 Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Resources for Newly Registered Families

Class Placements Family Input Form for the 2024-2025 School Year

We are starting to work on our plans for the 2024-2025 school year!   Class placements are an essential component of learning and building community. If you have information that you would like us to consider as we determine placements, please share your input by answering a few questions listed below. We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success, and we carefully consider each child’s strengths and needs during this process. Please do not request specific teachers, as this does not take into account the many variables we must take into consideration. It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral information.

Completion of this form is optional. If you would like to provide input, you may use this online form; OR you may email Elizabeth Watson ([email protected]); OR print a hard copy that may be sent to the office by May 24, 2024.

Weekly News & Announcements May 10, 2024 A Heartfelt Thanks to Our MUES Families & PTA!

This past week we celebrated Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week where we took the time to thank every member of our school staff for the great work they do each and everyday to ensure our Mustangs feel safe, respected, empowered, and supported to do their very best work. Our theme was Taylor Swift-inspired, "In Our Teacher & Staff Appreciation Era." From Starbucks gift cards to an Olive Garden lunch to new MUES swag and specialty cupcakes made by Cake Diva to a rainbow-themed table of treats to enjoy throughout the entire week, our staff felt incredibly spoiled and, more importantly, appreciated.

We extend our sincere gratitude to those families who donated snacks and drinks throughout the week and to all of our Mustangs who showered our teachers and staff members with flowers, handwritten notes, and special gifts. We would also like to extend a special thanks to our PTA for their generous donations in making this a special week for all of our MUES teachers and staff and one to remember!

Being connected to your school community helps you stay informed and support your child’s success. Take some time to get familiar with the many resources and tools available to FCPS families, including:

  • School Age Child Care (SACC) – This Fairfax County government program provides a safe and fun environment before and after school for elementary school-age children.
  • FCPS Communications for Families – FCPS shares news and information to support student learning and promote family involvement.
  • Family Engagement Resources – FCPS works to connect, strengthen, and support our families, schools, and communities.
  • Do You Know About Family Liaisons? Family liaisons serve as a link between families and schools. You may contact [family liaison’s name], our family liaison, at [email and phone number].

There’s an easy to follow five-step process outlined for parents registering their children for kindergarten. Be sure to register your child as soon as possible!

Register Your Children Online

Online registration is available for new and returning (re-enrolling) FCPS families! Apply today to help us plan for the 2024-25 school year.

National School Nurse Day May 8th

National School Nurse Day is Wednesday, May 8. It is a day to recognize the many contributions that school nurses make to student health and learning.

FCPS appreciates the role of School Public Health Nurses (PHNs) for their contribution to the health and welfare of all our students. Professional school nurses support the needs of students through their delivery of healthcare, contributions to local school communities, and promotion of safety, prevention, and wellness throughout the year. They are advocates who bridge healthcare and education by supporting student health and readiness to learn. School nurses are essential to our community and work tirelessly to make a positive impact in the lives of their students.

Please join us in thanking the PHNs for their hard work and dedication to FCPS students.  Additionally, thank you to our very own, Yasamin Asmat and our Public School Health Aide, Kareema Reyes for all that they do for our McNair Mustangs!  We appreciate you both so much!

Please remember to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the morning.

**Important Note: For the safety of all participants, students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at this event.**

Passover and Half-O Days

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Learn more about Passover in NatGeo Kids

Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, are designated half-O days in recognition of the first two days of Passover. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete school year calendar.

Theravada New Year (O Day)

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration. Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete school year calendar.

National Arab American Heritage Month

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Muslim Heritage Month

Muslim American Heritage Month is a time for celebrating the history, contributions, culture, and an enhanced understanding of the diverse population of Muslim Americans. View the Fairfax County School Board resolution honoring Muslim American Heritage Month.

Friendly Reminder: Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Coming Soon

Students in grades 3-12  took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing updated information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.
